More than 120 Red Crossers and local volunteers gathered at the Rancho Casa Blanca R.V. Park and Country Club in Indio, Calif. recently for the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign.
The campaign, launched in 2014, attempts to reduce the amount of death and injury by home fires by 25% in five years.
Volunteers, clad in Red Cross vests, went door to door asking residents if they could come check their existing smoke alarms, and if needed, replace outdated or non-functioning alarms with a free 10-year sealed, lithium ion battery smoke alarm. While in the home, volunteers educated residents on fire safety and evacuation plans.
Most of the volunteers of the four-hour event were residents of the park. Together, 306 homes were made safer through the installation of 536 smoke alarms.
“This is incredible,” said Amy Estey, regional disaster preparedness manager, American Red Cross Desert to the Sea Region. “The fact that we have 120 volunteers from the very neighborhood we’re working in shows their commitment to one another. It’s great to see neighbor helping neighbor today.”
Lois Beckman, executive director, American Red Cross Coachella Valley/Morongo Basin commented on the program and its impact in the communities we serve.
“Every day seven people are killed and another 36 people suffer injuries as a result of home fires,” said Beckman. “We are making a difference. As of February 2017, the Red Cross and our partners have saved at least 381 lives through the Home Fire Campaign.
